Pejorative Karma

Life has a way of sticking it to us when we really deserve it. That’s karma. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how the Tea Party Republicans might suffer the consequences of their despicable efforts to extort American democracy by closing down the US government if they don’t get their way; a way incidentally that was soundly rejected by the voters in the 2012 elections. My first choice (were I the arbiter of karma) would of course be that every Republican be voted out of office in the 2014 midterm elections, …but that’s not going to happen. This is the new America, where thanks to Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, a sufficient portion of the electorate has been dumbed-down to the point where they are completely out of touch with reality and have been duped by the mouth-pieces of the 1% to faithfully vote against their own best interests. The crazy Republicans I’m afraid are going to be around for awhile, wreaking havoc on the 99%. No… karma is more subtle than that, and perhaps more clever. So here is a consequence so obvious that it has most likely never occurred to the reality-challenged Republican conservatives. The term Obamacare will live through history, ensuring that the name of this black President whom the conservatives revile so much will endure through time while they and everything they believe in will have been relegated to the forgotten dust-bin of history. The irony of course is that the conservatives created the term ‘Obamacare’ themselves as a pejorative, hoping to bring down the President by attaching his name to a program which they intended to see trashed. Guess what! Obamacare is going to outlive all of its detractors and insure that this President goes down in history as one of the most famous, beloved by our descendents the way Lincoln, Washington, and Jefferson are.

Think about this for a moment. No other President in history has had his name attached to his signature program. Social Security is not named for Franklin Roosevelt. Medicare is not named for Lyndon Johnson. Both of these landmark laws have endured through history creating a lasting legacy for the men who created them. Now imagine Obamacare, delivering affordable health insurance to millions who otherwise would have none. It will join these other beloved programs as a part of the historic legacy of American progress, but thanks to the Republicans it will carry Barack Obama’s name right along with it. And if you love this irony, here is an even better one. The whole concept of Obamacare was thought up by Republicans, not Democrats, in an effort to deflect the country away from a single-payer system and thus guaranteeing profits for private-sector insurance corporations! No, Obamacare isn’t the system we progressives wanted. But when the right-wing attacked Hillary-care and made single-payer socialism politically impossible in this country, this was the more palatable plan they created and offered up as an alternative. The Republicans gave us the individual-mandate and now after divorcing themselves from the whole concept, here it is! A reality. They have guaranteed the historic legacy of the man they swore it was their first objective to make sure never got elected to a second term. Nice going, losers! Karma is a beautiful thing!

I read the European papers and I wonder: what is going on? Some right-winged people with lots of money and a few people who have no idea of Global politic (sorry, dear Tea Party) are going to ruin a whole country.

The Republicans and and a few nitwits  achieve what Al-Qaeda did not achieve:

The destruction of American.

Black Hand Trail walk

Perhaps you’ve noticed that I rail against Republicans a lot in my posts. Well, beyond their clear and obvious intent to subvert American democracy for the purpose of installing a plutocracy of wealthy corporatists, my opposition may have something to do with the fact that every single law they attempt to jam through state and federal legislatures appears to be aimed directly at me. Everything I do seems to offend them! I co-habit with my boyfriend out of wedlock, so they introduce a bill in Virginia to outlaw co-habitation between un-married couples. I occasionally walk topless in the woods or sunbathe topless so they introduce a bill in North Carolina outlawing bare nipples and aureola. Even nipple-slips can be punishable under their new law. Unless I have a baby attached to my bare nipple, I’d better have my tits properly hidden or I’m a criminal. I’m both Native American and bisexual, so they specifically strip protection of Native American women and LGBT women from the proposed Violence Against Women Act which they have been doing everything in their power to keep from passing at all. As a rape survivor I’m also offended by the reprehensible rape language Republicans have been using in the national media to shift the blame for rape from rapists onto women and doing everything in their power to cut off rape victims from fair avenues of justice in prosecuting their attackers and ending their access to proper health-care and abortion access in the event their rape results in an unwanted pregnancy. In state after state they’re legislating petty, prudish, but mostly misogynist measures against women’s freedoms. They’re going after our access to birth-control, our reproductive rights, equal access to health-care, even our right to vote! Several Republican commentators including Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh have openly advocated for stripping women of their voting rights. One Republican state legislator even proposed recently that women should voluntarily give up their right to vote because they don’t know what is best for them! Republican men do of course!

Republicans are against equal pay for women, they block us from career advancement with the glass-ceiling, they tell us to hide our shameful bodies, and if we get pregnant from rape to be thankful for the “new life” we’ve received as a gift from God. What is WRONG with these people?! In a worldwide recession where millions are out of work, they refuse to pass any legislation to ameliorate the jobs-crisis and instead dwell obsessively on controlling women’s bodies, humiliating them with forced trans-vaginal ultrasounds, and shoving them back into the barbaric days of back-alley abortions by de-funding Planned Parenthood, passing “trap” laws which regulate abortion providers out of business, gutting sex-education programs, and blocking women from access to birth-control. A proposed new Republican law in Arizona would give employers the power to request that their female employees who are being prescribed birth control pills provide proof that they’re using them for non-sexual reasons and allow them to fire their employees for using birth-control to prevent unwanted pregnancies. The only state in the entire United States which hasn’t passed any of these ridiculous Republican-backed laws that infringe on a woman’s reproductive rights is Oregon! Despite the fact that Roe vs. Wade has for nearly 40 years given us the legal right to obtain an abortion, it is all but impossible for most women in America to terminate an unwanted pregnancy even when their lives are medically in danger or if their pregnancy was the result of being raped! Why in the world are Republicans against the Taliban? They share exactly the same misogynistic attitudes towards women! Any woman who votes for any Republican candidate in any political race in America is insane. Republicans are the enemies of women and must be voted out of office at every opportunity or else America will soon become The Handmaid’s Tale. (Read it if you don’t know what I’m talking about!)

Changing the Continuum

There is a new science-fiction series on the SyFy channel called Continuum. I like it. But it presents a challenge to your ethical compass and leaves you with certain moral ambiguities which make me wonder whether I should be rooting for the protagonist or her enemies. The protagonist is a beautiful girl from the future who is essentially a special-tactics cop who works for the corporate rulers of the world in the year 2074. Democratic governments have apparently been swept away by the plutocratic powers of the corporate wealthy and everyone in the future is governed by the will of a consortium of powerful corporations. Her antagonists are a violent revolutionary group called Liber8, which has managed to come back in time to change the course of history so democratic governments will prevail over the corporatists. Her mission is to stop them so that the timeline remains unchanged and her corporate employers still come out on top. The revolutionaries are a desperate group however and resort to ruthless means to affect change in our present to bring about a future where people are free from corporate rule. None of their actions seem to generate any sympathy for their cause in the viewer, even though their cause seems eminently worthy. So whom are we suppose to cheer? She finds unwitting allies in our time who work with her to stop Liber8 as a dangerous terrorist faction even though they are unaware of the political future she is trying to preserve.

This is an interesting scenario because it is beginning to look as if large corporations will soon actually achieve that degree of unchecked power to nullify the sovereignty of democratically-elected governments. If you are a conservative on the right wing of the political spectrum you may find this projected future desirable. Conservatives fear big government but they have no such qualms about big, all-powerful corporations so perhaps this television series is aimed at them. Liberals like me however loathe the prospect of a society where big corporations can operate without the legal constraints of democratically-elected governments, so we favor big government that is powerful enough to regulate and rein-in corporations which pollute and create other damage to our society in the name of unbridled greed. Recently several of the major financial and banking conglomerates which caused the worldwide economic crash of 2008 arranged a settlement with the U.S. government to avoid prosecution for their fraud and malfeasance which resulted in the economic meltdown that still cripples the world economy today. Apparently these corporations are already too big and powerful to prosecute and the U.S. government which used to break up these monopolistic corporations under the anti-trust act is now impotent to challenge their political power and is virtually under their control. Corporations now own and control nearly all of the media outlets from which Americans get their information so they have become the most propagandized and brain-washed nation on Earth. Fox News is virtually an unapologetic and unfiltered mouthpiece for the wealthy elite who have literally bought our courts and legislatures. Search and read about ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council if you want to know just how thoroughly our federal government and state legislatures have become the puppets of the 1%.

The Occupy Movement sprang up as a counter to the abuses of corporate power but through attacks by corporate-owned media and corporate-controlled police forces the success of the movement as a populist instrument of social and political change has been suppressed at every level leaving us with a society and a government under the complete control of the wealthiest few. The FBI received information about right-wing conspirators who mapped out a covert plan to assassinate the leaders of the Occupy Movement last year but they did nothing to investigate it. Instead they investigated the movement itself! The disparity of incomes in America has become shocking as the power of unions and labor has come under attack, threatening the very existence of the middle-class. As the massive redistribution of wealth from the working class to the wealthy has brought America to the condition of a third-world country in many respects, no check or balance exists anymore to counter monied interest and influence over what’s left of our once-great democracy. Corporations are people, my friends! So their rights to free speech include the infusion of massive amounts of money into our political process thanks to the Supreme Court’s Citizen’s United ruling. Since the Republicans’ only constituency are the wealthiest few who continually line their pockets, the only hope for avoiding a future such as the one depicted in Continuum is for Americans to pull their heads out of the sand and start informing themselves, then acting to circumscribe the political power of the corporatists and the Republicans who serve only their interests.
